In a format dominated by creatures and spot removal, Baleful Strix stands out from the pack in that its both a terrific creature that can take any hit from the best creatures in the format and trade with parity thanks to deathtouch, but also acts as a magnet for spot removal

There are so many cards that target it with an ability every turn, making growing Heartfire Hero very easy

Zealous Conscripts You dont need to grab Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and go infinite with Zealous Conscripts for it to be really good

Since you can run two of them, this helps to avoid them totally outmatching regular Commanders

Two of the easiest upgrade paths would be to head toward a big artifact / reanimator strategy with cards like Goblin Welder, Daretti, Scrap Savant, and other huge artifact finishers like Wurmcoil Engine, or play a token- / Thopter-themed deck with the help of cards like Sai, Master Thopterist, Pia and Kiran Nalaar, and friends
